Catching up with Newman Civic Fellow: Jimmy Nguyen
On Tuesday, April 2nd, Mary Ryan, the director of Campus Compact for the Great Plains, Kathya Carvajal, communication intern, and Jimmy Nguyen, 2017-2018 Newman Civic Fellow, set out for brunch at First Watch, a popular breakfast and lunch restaurant.
Jimmy was nominated for the Newman Civic Fellowship by Advisor Connie Sorensen-Birk from TRiO/Project Achieve, a federally funded program for undergraduate students to help them meet their needs and finding what works best for the student.
“I was PROUD to have been chosen to represent the University of Nebraska at Omaha at the 2017 Newman Civic Fellows Conference last November. We came together to discuss ideas, share wisdom, and learn new ways we can help CHANGE the world.”
While at brunch, Jimmy informed us about the wonderful things that were in Boston, MA. From his flight, all the way back home, Jimmy stated it was a productive experience and they learned so much in the amount of time that he was at the conference. He made friends which he still keeps in contact with via social media, and came back to his campus with a renewed and improved vision on helping others in his community.
He mentioned that they were not only informed about how to be civically engaged, but what the process of running a non-profit organization and learning how bills are passed to make changes across the nation.
Jimmy is currently working on finishing his undergraduate degree in Pre-pharmacy and continuing his higher education. Nonetheless, he will always be involved in his community and working towards making big changes.
